Thailand/ Cambodia Update

Day 32 Bangkok to Siem Reap

Today we had an early start, up at 6am. The hotel had a really lush breakfast selection with lots of yummy pancakes and other nice stuff. We got on the bus and drove 4 hours to the border and crossed by foot with some guy wheeling along our luggage. Once we got to the other side we had 3 hours more of driving before we reached Siem Reap in Cambodia. The hotel was really nice, it had huge beds and free wifi and Internet cafe. We had a quick freshen up before heading to New Hope. New Hope was started by a tuc tuc driver who wanted to help children who couldn't afford school to get an education. I think it was started about 3 years ago with 20 pupils and now has over 500. They do such amazing work. The children simply do English lessons all the time with the exception of a couple of hours a week for maths and a couple for other subjects. They also have a health clinic there so the poor who can't afford treatment (treatment is only available up to the age of 14) can receive help. They are also in the process of setting up a trade school i.e. teaching to become plumbers, mechanics and electricians. Here we taught the children English which was so amazing. The enthusiasm they had was unbelievable and they really enjoyed themselves. I definitely want to volunteer teaching English either here or somewhere similar elsewhere in the world! They also have a restaurant at New Hope where the older pupils (about 20years old) are taught to cook and then they run the restaurant for GAP tour groups. It was really cool. I very much enjoyed this evening. BYE.x
